About me
عنّي
I am an arabic tutor living and working from Oslo, Norway. I teach Modern Standard Arabic (MSA- Fos7a) and Shami dialect (Levantine dialect). I use different materials depending on which form of language is learned. However, an essentail part of my teaching program is the participation and conversation with the learners. Learning is an exchange that should always reflect its seekers. Language learning reflects many aspects from linguistics and culture to history and politics.
For MSA teachings we can use text books like Al-Kitaab, Mastering Arabic, Standard Arabic and Media Arabic. While for Shami dielct teachings I use self-made materials tailored to the need/level of the students. That's beside the notes and content that are taken and studied during the class. I always include recommendations of interesting and fun visual and audio contents that my students can use and learn from. Shows, podcasts, series that can be followed on YouTube, Spotify or other social media platforms.
I teach Shami dialect using transcribed letters into latin for those who are after learning to communicate verbally with the people or their families. Though a knowledge of the Arabic alphabets, numbers and learning of spelling are important to advance the learning. I teach both online, at my place and in institutions.
I am an Iraqi Syrian woman holder of a BA in English Literature with complementary studies in peace and conflict studies. I am in my third year of studing multilingual/ multicultural pedagogy in the University of Agder UiA.

Courses
The course consists of an agreed number of meetings with me (ZOOM or in person) where we go through themes, vocabularies, sentences and grammar tailored to your needs. Themes are inspired by our daily life, work, news and pop culture. We use books, YouTube, News channels and podcasts as teaching materials. I have books with grammar exercises of different levels in MSA and my own self-created materials for 3amiyye (Dialect). I have a big Arabic library of online content that we can use in our classes and for homework.
I can help you improve your oral skills as well as writing and reading. Homework is a part of each class; listening and writing. Dialogue is a key element in my classes. We learn best through exchange and inter-activeness.
During the class I note down all our class content and it’s all saved on my Google Drive that you will always have access to. So nothing goes to waste.
Learning Arabic is learning not only learning about linguistics but also about the Arabic culture, traditions and history as well as regional politics. Arabic language in modern history has been inflected by all sort of negative stereotypes due to its complex reality and the colonial narrative that is still present. Therefore, It’s important to improve the understanding of the language, its history and present, from a local point of view.

Cancellations must be noted more than 24 hours before the class for the free bookings. For the courses, cancellations mean rescheduling within the designated period of the course. For cancellation of entire course, a refund of 50% of what's left of your classes will be returned.
If you have a funky schedule book me in non-binding classes (free classes) and not in a course. But make sure you have the time to study and learn Arabic before booking a course. Otherwise It will be a hassel for you and for me.
Special prices for old-time homies and especially if you bring me more students. The more, the merrier. Just like a true Arab family.

Hilde has a doctorate in international politics and American foreign policy from the University of Virginia and works as an associate professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at Bjørknes University College. Hilde started studying Arabic with me in early 2019, Levant dialect (Shami). I use my own materials and notes beside free-flowing conversations to create our contents. Hilde is learning Arabic to learn her husband's mother tongue.

Emma has a degree in economics and works at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She started learning Arabic a few years ago and had lived in Jordan. Emma contacted me after she found my advert poster in the public library in 2019 to learn and improve her Arabic. She is learning MSA Arabic (Fos7a). Emma is interested in national and international politics, and wants to use Arabic further in her career.

Laura is a senior adviser at NOREF. She works in the area of gender and inclusivity in dialogue, mediation, peace processes and transitions. Her work has focused on the Arab world and therefore she learned to speak Arabic. Together we discussed and read texts relating to her job about gender representations to train and build up her conversational Arabic skills prior to her mission.

Linda is the Middle East and East Europe section manager at Save the Children-Norway. She was my boss during my work at STC. Soon after i left the organisation I restarted my teaching carrier and Linda contacted me to hold Arabic spoken course to teach her and her team in the section. We started our classes early 2019. I teach them using my own materials transcribed to Latin. We used to meet at their office to do the classes, but with Covid restrictions we switched to online classes.

Ole is a foreign policy journalist working for Klassekampen newspaper in Norway. He's specialised on the issues of Middle East and North Africa. Ole has lived for a short time in Lebanon and Syria in 2019 to write his book "En Helvetes Jobb". His interest in the language started then and especially in the spoken form. In the Levantine region we use the word 'MaSari' for money istead of the standard 'Maal' or 'Fuloos'. This word is created from MaSer as in Egypt and it refers to the golden money the Egyptian had used.
